Lansing drivers will lose another downtown intersection Friday when the city shuts down Pine Street and Kalamazoo Street for sewer construction.

The closure begins Friday, Sept. 25, and is expected to last through Saturday, Nov. 21, according to a traffic advisory from Mayor Andy Schor's administration. The work is part of the combined sewer overflow (CSO) Cherry/Pine/Kalamazoo Project, which has been shutting down segments of downtown Lansing in phases since at least May.

The Walnut Street and Kalamazoo Street intersection has been closed since at least Aug. 17 for the same project. That closure was originally expected to wrap up by Oct. 31. The Nov. 21 end date now applies to both intersections.

Detour routes

The city laid out two detour routes for drivers who normally use Pine and Walnut streets:

Northbound: East on Malcolm X Street, north on Capitol Avenue, west on Allegan Street back to Walnut and Pine.

Southbound: East on Allegan Street, south on Capitol Avenue, west on St. Joseph Street back to Walnut and Pine.

The Public Service Department said existing Walnut Street detours will be updated once the Pine/Kalamazoo intersection closes.

Months of closures

The CSO project has been reshaping downtown traffic for months. Kalamazoo Street from Walnut to Capitol Avenue closed July 31. The Kalamazoo Street Bridge over the Grand River closed at the same time. On Aug. 17, Kalamazoo Street from Walnut to Pine closed as well.

The project's total cost and overall scope have not been disclosed in any of the city's traffic advisories.
