Lansing police shot and killed a man who was banging on doors and windows with a handgun in south Lansing early Wednesday, Sept. 23.

Officers went to the 600 block of East Jolly Road at 4:21 a.m. after 911 callers reported the armed man, the Lansing Police Department said in a statement, according to the Lansing State Journal. The block sits just east of South Cedar Street.

The department confirmed that an officer-involved shooting occurred but did not describe the sequence of events between officers' arrival and the shooting. The man died at the scene. His name has not been released.

No officers or residents were injured, according to the department. The department also said there is no current threat to the public, WLNS reported.

Michigan State Police has taken over the investigation, which is standard Lansing Police Department policy when officers are involved in a shooting, a department spokesperson told WKAR. The names of the officers involved have not been released.

Scene and response

A WILX News 10 crew at the scene observed crime scene tape, an evidence tent and personnel from multiple agencies, including Lansing Police, East Lansing Police and the Ingham County Sheriff's Office. Lansing State Journal photographs showed evidence markers on the ground and Michigan State Police investigators working alongside Lansing officers.

The Lansing Police Department said on X at 4:40 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23, that the scene was active and urged residents to avoid the area. In a follow-up post, the department said the media staging area would be set up Jolly Road and Battenfield Road.
