Michael “Mikey” Glynn Jr. spent about six years helping customers at Westlund’s Apple Market, including carrying groceries to their cars in all kinds of weather.

On Wednesday, Aug. 19, the 63-year-old was struck and killed by a driver who left the scene, police said.

The crash happened around 11 p.m. in the 3200 block of East Grand River Avenue, near the Frandor shopping complex. Officers found Glynn at the scene and began life-saving measures, but he was later pronounced dead at a hospital, according to the Lansing State Journal.

As of the most recent public reports, police had not identified the driver or released a vehicle description.

Glynn’s identity was confirmed to the Lansing State Journal by longtime Westlund’s employee Kristi Shetty and his best friend, Miguel Rodriguez of Lansing.

Shetty called Glynn a “local celebrity” in the Frandor neighborhood and said customers at the market knew and loved him.

“He never called in sick. He would take groceries out for our customers without even being asked,” Shetty told the Lansing State Journal. “He was just really helpful and kind.”

Glynn worked at Westlund’s on and off for about six years before retiring last fall because of health issues. He was known to walk to businesses around the Frandor area, including Meijer and Walgreens.

Rodriguez told the Lansing State Journal that he and Glynn met in 1993 and remained close for more than 30 years. Glynn was godfather to Rodriguez’s son, and both of Rodriguez’s children called him “Unca Mikey.” Rodriguez described his friend as someone who loved music and playing euchre and was always willing to sacrifice for others.

On Friday, Aug. 21, Westlund’s Apple Market identified Glynn as a former employee on social media and asked anyone with information about the crash to contact police, as WLNS reported.

A witness called 911 to report the crash, Lansing Police spokesperson Jordan Gulkis told Lansing City Pulse. The city issued an alert at 11:08 p.m. closing East Grand River Avenue between Clippert Street and Coolidge Road, according to WLNS.

The crash occurred just west of where East Grand River Avenue merges with East Saginaw Street, as we reported Aug. 20.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Lansing Police Department at (517) 483-4600. The department’s official contact information confirms that number.
