Shiawassee Street between Capitol Avenue and Grand Avenue will shut down Monday, Aug. 17, for utility construction that the Lansing Board of Water & Light expects to last through mid-November.
That makes three downtown corridors closed the same week. Grand River Avenue from César E. Chávez Avenue to Willow Street and Kalamazoo Street from Walnut to Pine are both closing Monday for separate CSO sewer separation projects.
BWL's announcement, published Friday, Aug. 14, says local access will be maintained during the roughly three-month project. The utility did not specify whether the work involves electric, water or gas infrastructure.
The city's detour map lays out three reroutes:
- Eastbound: South on Capitol Avenue, east on Ionia Street, north on Grand Avenue back to Shiawassee.
- Westbound: North on Grand Avenue, west on Oakland Avenue, south on Capitol Avenue back to Shiawassee.
- Southbound Grand Avenue: East on Shiawassee Street, south on Cedar Street, west on Michigan Avenue back to Grand Avenue.
The detour map also shows existing closures in the area marked in dashed red, confirming multiple overlapping construction zones in the downtown core.
BWL has been busy in this corridor all year. The utility closed a segment of Grand Avenue between Shiawassee and Ionia streets from July 30 through Aug. 1 for construction, according to a separate city notice. An earlier southbound Grand Avenue closure in the same block ran from May 18 through early July.
The Lansing Public Service Department also posted the closure details on X on Friday, Aug. 14, linking to the city advisory.
