Lansing nonprofit Punks With Lunch has launched a mobile shower and laundry trailer to bring hot showers and clean clothes to people experiencing homelessness across the city.

The 27-foot trailer includes two private showers, a lavatory and three washer-dryer units, WILX reported. The Ingham County Housing and Homeless Millage funded the project. On Thursday, Sept. 10, the trailer was stationed outside the Punks With Lunch building, with plans to take it to south and north Lansing neighborhoods where the organization says fewer resources exist for unhoused residents.

Kelsea Hector, executive director of Punks With Lunch, said the trailer addresses dignity alongside hygiene.

"… Anytime that we can show up for our neighbors and kind of restore some of that dignity that was kind of taken from them, we're all about it," Hector said.

Ingham County voters approved the half-mill housing millage in November 2024. The county announced on Sept. 3, 2025, that nine nonprofits would share about $2.48 million in first-round grants, according to WLNS. Punks With Lunch was among the recipients, though the organization's individual grant amount has not been disclosed.

The homeless count in Ingham County rose to roughly 850 in the 2026 annual street survey, up from an average of 660 in prior years, according to the Lansing State Journal. The number of unsheltered individuals in the county climbed 32% from 2022 to 2025, according to the Capital Region Housing Collaborative.

Punks With Lunch started informally in 2017, handing out sack lunches at Reutter Park in downtown Lansing. The organization formally incorporated in 2021 and now has 10 staff members serving Ingham, Eaton and Shiawassee counties.

It provides overdose response, harm reduction education and essentials for people experiencing homelessness. The nonprofit hires people with lived experience in housing instability and substance use, according to Michigan State University's Spartan Newsroom.

At an Aug. 18 community meeting about Lansing's Nova Housing Initiative, Hector told WILX, "They don't need saving. They need support."

To keep the trailer running, Punks With Lunch is collecting towels, laundry soap, dryer sheets, body wash, shampoo and conditioner. Donations are accepted at 809 Center St. in Lansing, Monday through Friday starting at noon. Hours run until 5 p.m. most days, with extended hours until 8 p.m. on Wednesdays. Residents can also call (517) 657-1959 or visit pwllansing.com for more information.

No specific schedule has been announced for when the trailer will begin its mobile routes in south and north Lansing.
