MSU President Kevin Guskiewicz offered the clearest public timeline yet for the Spartan Stadium District, telling a Welcome Week audience Tuesday, Aug. 25, that he expects a crane to be visible near Spartan Stadium within 12 to 18 months, according to The State News.

"There will be a crane here probably around Spartan Stadium and around that stadium district I hope over the next 12 to 18 months," Guskiewicz said at a press conference in the Yakeley Hall courtyard.

Construction plans for the entertainment district on Shaw Lane are being prepared for the Michigan State University Board of Trustees to review "soon," Guskiewicz said, though he did not name a specific meeting date. The board's next scheduled meeting is Sept. 11, when it will formally approve new athletic director Dan Bartholomae's contract, The State News reported.

The district would add three or four restaurants and a hotel near Spartan Stadium, creating a year-round destination beyond football game days, according to MLive. IM West, a building adjacent to the stadium, is scheduled for demolition to make room for the development.

Bartholomae, who was hired from Western Michigan University and officially starts Monday, Aug. 31, will oversee the project. At Bartholomae's Aug. 20 introductory press conference, Guskiewicz said MSU needed someone who "has the business acumen" to run the stadium district the way a CEO would.

The stadium district is one piece of a larger athletics overhaul. Renovations to Spartan Stadium itself are estimated at roughly $500 million, with a construction start previously targeted for fall 2027 and completion by summer 2029, according to MLive. That earlier timeline came from former AD J Batt before his June departure; Guskiewicz's 12-to-18-month window may reflect a separate groundbreaking for the entertainment district rather than the full stadium renovation.

The broader fundraising vehicle, FOR SPARTA, is a $1 billion capital initiative that had raised nearly $250 million as of December 2025. A $401 million donation from Greg and Dawn Williams, with $290 million earmarked for the initiative, anchors the effort. The Board of Trustees first approved authorization to plan for Spartan Stadium's modernization in December 2024.
