Michigan State University shut down Berkey Hall on Thursday, Sept. 3, and shifted all classes in the building to remote instruction after police investigated a reported threat. The university said Berkey Hall was scheduled to reopen for normal operations this morning, Friday, Sept. 4, at 7 a.m., and that there is no threat to campus.

MSU's Department of Police and Public Safety learned of the threat on Wednesday, Sept. 2, WILX reported. The information came from a medical professional and was secondhand, prompting the investigation, the university said. The threat involved a program located inside Berkey Hall, according to MSU.

"The information law enforcement has is specific enough to narrow their focus to Berkey Hall," MSU spokesperson Amber McCann told WILX.

The university did not specify which program or describe the nature of the threat.

Police found individual in Washtenaw County

MSU police worked with other law enforcement agencies during the investigation. Officers made contact with the individual at a location in Washtenaw County, according to WILX.

The person was taken into protective custody under the Michigan Mental Health Code, MSU said. The individual is not an MSU student or employee. No charges were reported.

MSU sent a text alert to the campus community Thursday morning stating it had temporarily closed the building while law enforcement assessed a reported potential threat. The alert said there was no indication of a threat to the broader campus at that time.

The Lansing State Journal reported that MSU did not initially provide details about the nature of the threat.

Berkey Hall was site of 2023 mass shooting

Berkey Hall was the site of the Feb. 13, 2023, mass shooting in which a gunman killed three MSU students and injured five others. The three students killed were Arielle Anderson, Brian Fraser and Alexandria Verner. The building was closed after the shooting but later reopened.

MSU's Department of Police and Public Safety operates a 24/7 security operations center that monitors campus cameras, manages building access control and answers non-emergency calls, according to a WILX report from Aug. 28 on the department's operations during fall move-in.
