Earvin "Magic" Johnson is coming home.

The Lansing Everett High School legend will deliver the keynote address at the Legacy of Magic Gala on Saturday, Aug. 22, at the Breslin Center on Michigan State University's campus in East Lansing. The event, hosted by the YMCA of Metropolitan Lansing, runs from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and benefits YMCA scholarships and facility improvements.

Tickets are still available at LegacyOfMagic.org, though WILX News 10 reported supplies are limited.

Everett's greatest Viking

Johnson earned his nickname at 15 after recording a triple-double of 36 points, 18 rebounds and 16 assists as a sophomore at Everett. Lansing State Journal sportswriter Fred Stabley Jr. gave him the "Magic" moniker that stuck for a Hall of Fame career.

As a senior in 1977, Johnson led the Vikings to a 27-1 record and the Michigan Class A state championship, earning Michigan Mr. Basketball honors. He is one of the few athletes to win championships at the high school, college and professional levels within a three-year span: Everett in 1977, Michigan State in 1979 and the Los Angeles Lakers in 1980.

Johnson went on to win five NBA titles, three MVP awards and 12 All-Star selections. His No. 33 is retired at Michigan State; the Lakers retired his No. 32.

The YMCA connection

Johnson grew up playing basketball at the Lansing YMCA. His mother, Christine Johnson, still attends three times a week at age 90.

"Since that first day Earvin stepped into the Lansing Y, there have been a million little Magics who have followed behind him," YMCA President and CEO Casey Thompson said in a June 23 statement announcing the gala.

Thompson, the first female president in the organization's history, has led the Lansing YMCA since 2022. All proceeds from the gala will fund scholarships and facility upgrades as the organization counts down to its 150th anniversary in 2027.

What to expect

Michigan State men's basketball coach Tom Izzo and Lupe Izzo serve as honorary chairs alongside Kellie Dean and Marilyn Dean, all of whom will deliver remarks. The evening includes a silent auction, live auction, live jazz, a tribute presentation and formal dinner.

The gala is an 18-and-older event. Cocktail attire is requested.

The YMCA has also teased an "exciting announcement" about the organization's future, set to be revealed at the gala on Aug. 22.
