Flash your East Lansing Public Library card at checkout in September and you'll save money at nine neighborhood businesses, pick up free stickers and a yard sign at the front desk, and enter a raffle for Hannah Community Center day passes.
The library announced the promotion in an Aug. 11 blog post to mark National Library Card Sign-Up Month, a nationwide effort that began in 1988. The deals run all of September and are open to anyone who signs up for, renews or simply shows a valid ELPL card.
The discounts
Nine East Lansing businesses are participating, all for in-person purchases:
- Biggby Coffee (Lake Lansing and Abbott locations) — $1 off any drink
- Capital City Sweets — 10% off your order
- Carousel Consignments — 15% off normal-priced items
- Flesh Adornments Piercing Studio — 10% off
- Fueld — 20% off your order
- H Tea Cafe — 20% off your order
- Mahabir Wellness — 20% off natural skincare treatments, 20% off first-time body contours, plus a complimentary mini mental health consultation
- Urban Roots Salon — $5 off cuts, $10 off chemical services
- Wild Birds Unlimited East Lansing — $10 off a $50 purchase
Giveaways and raffle
Stop by the library's front desk at 950 Abbot Road during September with your card and walk away with a free sticker, a yard sign and one item from a "treasure chest."
Supplies are limited.
The same visit enters you in a raffle for day passes to the Hannah Community Center, located just down Abbot Road at 819 Abbot Road.
What a card gets you
Beyond the September perks, an ELPL card unlocks physical books, movies and music; e-books and audiobooks through Hoopla and Libby; streaming films on Kanopy; Library of Things items such as ukuleles, zoo passes and power tools; up to three hours on public computers; and interlibrary loans through MeLcat.
ELPL Director Chrissie Evaskis-Garrett said at the library's musical children's garden opening in June that she looks forward to "seeing you in the stacks."
