Fifth Third Bank closed 11 Mid-Michigan branches as part of a statewide consolidation completed over Labor Day weekend, following its acquisition of Comerica.

The Cincinnati-based bank converted 293 former Comerica banking centers and migrated roughly 600,000 customer accounts across five states, WLNS reported. A Fifth Third spokesperson confirmed to WOOD TV8 that the consolidation is complete.

In Michigan alone, 75 branches closed. Of those, 55 were legacy Comerica locations and 20 were existing Fifth Third branches, according to the Detroit Free Press. After the closures, 227 Fifth Third branches remain statewide.

The company said it chose which locations to shutter based on historical use, location, traffic patterns and facility age, according to WLNS. Most closed locations have another Fifth Third branch within 1 mile, the bank said.

Fifth Third said former Comerica customers can now reach 60% more branches across Michigan, while existing Fifth Third customers gained access to 42% more locations.

The conversion also triggered layoffs. Two Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) filings posted Tuesday, Sept. 8, show Fifth Third cutting more than 700 jobs in Oakland County: 502 employees in Farmington Hills and 234 in Auburn Hills. The company did not say how many additional positions were eliminated at closed branches statewide.

A Fifth Third spokesperson told WLNS in an email Tuesday, Sept. 8, that the company's priority has been supporting affected employees and exploring other opportunities within the bank where possible.

Fifth Third merged with Comerica on Sunday, Feb. 1, according to DBusiness. The deal made Fifth Third the ninth-largest U.S. bank, with more than $300 billion in assets. In Michigan, the combined bank holds the No. 1 retail deposit share.

Tim Spence, Fifth Third's chairman, president and CEO, said in a statement Sept. 8 that the company is monitoring the customer experience and is "ready to help wherever needed."

About 94% of Fifth Third's Michigan branches will offer safe deposit boxes, with more than 196,000 boxes available statewide, according to the Detroit Free Press. Most closed branches have another Fifth Third location within 1 mile.
