Washington Avenue in REO Town will close briefly Saturday morning as runners take to the streets for the 16th annual BWL Hometown Power 5K.
The 3.1-mile race starts at 9:15 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, from the BWL REO Town Headquarters at 1201 S. Washington Ave. The paved course winds through surrounding REO Town neighborhoods, according to BWL's event page. Runners will pass the BWL Central Substation, where new public art was installed around July 30 through a partnership between BWL and the Arts Council of Greater Lansing.
The race has been a REO Town fixture since 2011.
Road closure
The City of Lansing announced that Washington Avenue between Elm Street and Baker Street will close at approximately 8:40 a.m. and reopen by approximately 9:25 a.m. Saturday. Motorists should use caution if driving in the route area during that 45-minute window. A route map is available on the city's website through the road-closure notice.
How to register
Registration is $30 and available online at RunSignUp. The early-bird rate of $25 expired Wednesday, Aug. 5. Runners can also find race details and confirm pricing at BWL's registration page.
Lansing BWL promoted the event on X in late July, noting the course scenery and encouraging residents to register before race day. The utility has hosted the run each August as a community fitness event organized out of its REO Town headquarters.
