Human remains believed to be several years old were found on the evening of Saturday, Sept. 26, in the 2400 block of Tecumseh River Road in Lansing, prompting a multi-agency investigation.

Officers responded around 7 p.m. after a report of a suspicious situation, the Lansing Police Department said in a statement Sunday, Sept. 27. When they arrived, they found what appeared to be human remains.

The department's crime scene investigation unit and the Michigan State Police Crime Lab were called in first. Investigators then brought in Michigan State University's anthropology team to assist with a more thorough examination of the scene.

The 2400 block of Tecumseh River Road is north of the Grand River and south of the Capital Region International Airport, according to the Lansing State Journal.

Based on the condition of the remains, police believe they are several years old. The case has been turned over to the Medical Examiner's Office, which is working to identify the individual.

"This investigation is still very early," Lansing police spokesperson Jordan Gulkis said in a Sunday statement to the Lansing State Journal. "Right now, the case is with the Medical Examiner's Office as we work to learn more about the remains and identify the individual."

In the same statement, Gulkis pushed back on viral social media claims. Reports circulating online that a leg was pulled from the river are not accurate, she said. WILX also reported the department's denial of those claims.

Police haven't announced a timeline for identification results or a follow-up briefing, and no officials from the Michigan State Police Crime Lab or the MSU anthropology team have been named in any published report on the case.
