Southbound Grand Avenue in downtown Lansing closes Monday, Sept. 28, for nearly seven weeks while crews add a bus lane at the Capital Area Transportation Authority (CATA) Transportation Center.

The closure covers the block between Kalamazoo Street and Lenawee Street. Work is expected to last until the end of the day Sunday, Nov. 15, according to a traffic advisory issued by the city's Public Service Department under Mayor Andy Schor.

Drivers heading south on Grand Avenue will need to turn west on Kalamazoo Street, then south on Washington Square and east on Lenawee Street to rejoin Grand Avenue south of the work zone. The city said a detour map is available on its website.

The project is described as a bus lane addition tied to work at the CATA Transportation Center. The center, located in downtown Lansing, serves as the central and western hub of the CATA system. It also handles intercity bus service from carriers including Greyhound and Indian Trails. CATA is headquartered at 511 S. Washington Ave.

The Public Service Department stated that the closure begins Monday, Sept. 28, and that a detour will be in place for the duration of the work. No project cost, construction phasing details or explanation of the lane's design has been released publicly.

The department posted the advisory Friday, Sept. 25, giving commuters and downtown residents three days' notice before the Monday start. The 48-day closure will affect one of the main southbound corridors through downtown Lansing during the fall.
