Lansing Eastern's boys soccer team won its first CAAC Gold Cup championship Thursday, Oct. 8, beating top-seeded Okemos in a penalty-kick shootout at Okemos High School.
The Quakers and Wolves played to a 1-1 draw through regulation before Lansing Eastern won the shootout 4-3, as reported by WILX. It is the first Gold Cup title in program history.
Lansing Eastern’s Tresor Ebuela opened the scoring on a penalty kick after Okemos' goalkeeper was shown a red card for fouling him in the box with 33 minutes left in regulation. Okemos' Liam Antcliff equalized four minutes later, finishing a rebound off a Nico Rey shot to make it 1-1. Eastern converted its fifth-round penalty to clinch the championship, winning the shootout 4-3.
The Gold Cup crown caps a breakthrough season under third-year head coach Luke Kane. The Quakers also won their first-ever CAAC Red division title this fall, according to the Lansing State Journal. MaxPreps lists their record as 15-1-3 overall and 4-0-1 in league play, per MaxPreps.
Ebuela has been the driving force all season. He scored four goals in the Quakers' 5-1 semifinal win over East Lansing on Tuesday, Oct. 6, the program's first-ever Gold Cup game. After that semifinal, he told WLNS, "Job's not finished but getting to move on [is great]."
The job is done now.
Kane told WLNS after the Oct. 6 semifinal that being in the Gold Cup was "a privilege and an honor" for his team. Two days later, his players brought home the trophy.
Lansing Eastern now turns to the MHSAA Division 2 state tournament. Boys soccer district games are scheduled for Oct. 14–16 and Oct. 19–24, according to the MHSAA calendar.
