Michigan State University’s Beaumont Tower in East Lansing will feature animated projections and Halloween music during “The Ringing 3: Music for All Hallows Eve” at 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29.

University carillonist Jon Lehrer and theater professor Alison Dobbins will present the free outdoor concert, according to the MSU College of Music. No ticket is required.

The program includes Mozart’s “Lacrimosa,” Saint-Saëns’ “Danse macabre” and music from “Pan’s Labyrinth” and “Howl’s Moving Castle.”

Eight themed chapters will pair music from the tower’s 49-bell carillon with animated projections created by students and professionals in animation and special effects, according to MSU Today. Chapter titles include “Night Falls,” “Undead Rising,” “Back to Life” and “Last Dance.”

Lehrer trained at the Royal Carillon School in Mechelen, Belgium, and earned a mathematics degree from Yale University, according to MSU’s profile of him. He previously worked in data science and joined MSU as a part-time carillonist in 2022.

“What keeps me in it is the fact that it’s music in public spaces, and it’s music that’s part of a community identity,” Lehrer told The State News in an August profile.

Jim and Rose Zacks are sponsoring the event. The College of Music lists the rain date as “to be announced.” Visitors should check the organizer’s event page for weather-related updates.
