Lansing voters will have two locations to cast early ballots starting Saturday, Oct. 24. City Clerk Chris Swope expects a busy 10 days of voting.
Swope told WILX he is staffing about six workers per shift at both the Lansing Elections Office, 701 W. Jolly Road, and the Foster Community Center, 200 N. Foster Ave.
Both sites will be open eight hours a day Oct. 24-Nov. 1, with shorter hours Monday, Nov. 2, according to the city clerk’s schedule.
The elections office will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 24-27 and Oct. 29-Nov. 1, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 28, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 2.
Foster will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 24-Nov. 1 and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 2.
During the 2024 presidential election, roughly 9,000 to 10,000 Lansing residents voted early between the two sites, Swope said. He described that election as the first in which early voting gained significant adoption among Lansing voters.
Early voting turnout dipped for the August 2026 primary compared with the 2024 presidential election, Swope said.
“I think it’s caught on. I think being a November general election, I think it’s going to be pretty busy at our locations,” Swope said.
Voters can complete a ballot at their assigned early voting site or bring a completed absentee ballot to insert into a tabulator after election workers verify it, according to the Michigan Secretary of State.
Swope cautioned that some residents with Lansing ZIP codes live in neighboring jurisdictions such as Delta Township or Lansing Township. He urged voters to confirm their jurisdiction ahead of time to avoid making two trips.
Lansing Charter Township is offering early voting at Township Hall, 3209 W. Michigan Ave., from Oct. 24 through Nov. 1, according to the township’s election announcement.
Delta Township adds election workers
In Delta Township, Clerk Mary Clark told WILX she is adding a second election worker to both the ballot-on-demand station and the tabulator area. Precincts already double-staff those positions on Election Day, but Clark is extending that approach to early voting after higher-than-expected turnout during the 2024 presidential election.
“We were doing over 500 a day with the presidential, which was way more than we expected,” Clark said.
Clark said she expects more than 50% of Delta Township voters to cast ballots before Election Day through early voting and absentee voting combined.
The township’s early voting site is at Township Hall, 7710 W. Saginaw Highway, through the west entrance and upstairs in the boardroom, WILX reported.
Michigan voters approved early voting through a constitutional amendment in November 2022, according to the Secretary of State. This is the first gubernatorial election since that approval, and Clark said clerks are continuing to refine the process.
Voters must use an early voting site designated for their jurisdiction. Residents can check their assigned location and hours at Michigan.gov/Vote.
